NVIDIA Stock This Week: $150B Buyback Could Fuel More Gains

Nvidia stock this week is trading higher after the chipmaker announced a record $150 billion increase to its share repurchase program on Monday, September 28, 2026. The Nvidia $150 billion buyback lifts the total remaining authorization to $235 billion, and NVIDIA called it the largest share repurchase authorization increase in history. The Nvidia stock price rose 1.2% in premarket trading on the news, and the new buyback could help set the stage for more Nvidia stock gains in the months ahead.

NVIDIA Stock Buyback Could Boost Gains as Investors Weigh Upside

Most of the action around NVDA stock this week comes down to one decision. NVIDIA’s Board of Directors approved the Nvidia $150 billion buyback under the company’s existing repurchase program, and NVIDIA said it expects to execute the full $235 billion through fiscal year 2028.

According to data compiled by Bloomberg, that makes it the largest buyback program in U.S. history, and a big reason Nvidia stock is in the headlines. In the first half of fiscal 2027, the company had already bought back a total of 203 million shares for $39.8 billion.

What The $150 Billion Buyback Means For Shareholders

A company buys its own shares on the open market, and with fewer shares left in circulation, each remaining share ends up with a bigger slice of the earnings. That is the main reason the buyback has turned into the biggest talking point for Nvidia stock this week.

An authorization is not an obligation, though, and NVIDIA gets to decide how fast it spends the money. Still, the cash is there. NVIDIA generated $74.4 billion in operating cash flow in the first half of fiscal 2027 alone.

Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of NVIDIA, had this to say:

“NVIDIA’s growth is being driven by a once-in-a-generation platform shift to AI and accelerated computing. Our cash generation gives us the capacity to invest in the technologies that advance this transformation and return capital to shareholders. This authorization reflects our confidence in the long-term opportunity ahead.”

How The NVIDIA Stock Price Reacted On Monday

Nvidia stock this week kicked off on a positive note. Shares of NVDA rose 1.2% in premarket trading, and Investing.com reported the stock was up 1.9% on Monday morning, even as the broader tech sector slumped. Rivals such as AMD and Intel also ticked up after the announcement.

For traders following NVDA, the longer run matters too. The Nvidia stock price has climbed 24% over the past 12 months, lifting its market cap to $5.42 trillion at the time of writing.

Can NVIDIA Stock Gains Continue From Here?

The Nvidia $150 billion buyback gives the company a steady source of demand for its own shares through fiscal 2028, and that kind of support can help soften pullbacks. It also tells the market that the board believes the shares still have plenty of room to grow.

A buyback does not guarantee more NVDA stock gains, though. Early moves can fade, and the bigger swings in Nvidia stock this week and beyond will still come from AI chip demand and quarterly earnings.

Right now, the record Nvidia stock buyback is the headline for Nvidia stock this week, and it gives shareholders a large and steady layer of support as trading continues.
