Global AI Funding Soars With Record Billion-Dollar Rounds in Q3 2026
Global venture funding reached $159 billion in Q3 2026, driven by record billion-dollar rounds, artificial intelligence investments, and major startup IPOs and acquisitions.

According to Crunchbase data, global venture funding reached $159 billion in Q3 2026, supporting close to 6,000 startups. Although this marked the lowest quarter for startup investment so far this year, it still surpassed every quarter recorded since Q2 2022.

Billion-dollar fundings
A prominent trend in 2026 is the surge in startups securing billion-dollar-plus rounds. Q3 2026 established an all-time record with 27 companies closing rounds of that magnitude, surpassing the previous record of 16 companies set in Q2 and the 14 companies reported in Q1.
Roughly one-third of all global venture capital raised in Q3 went directly to those 27 businesses. In the prior two quarters, these massive raises similarly pushed overall funding well above historical averages.
While no single entity raised funding in the tens of billions last quarter, eight companies secured rounds of $3 billion or greater, with frontier labs and data centers dominating the largest transactions. Among these eight enterprises, five were established within the last four years.
The largest funding transactions went to Databricks and Safe Superintelligence, which each secured $5 billion. Close behind, Crusoe, Moonshot AI, Mistral AI, Nscale, The Boring Co., and Kling AI each brought in more than $3 billion.
US and sectors
U.S.-based companies maintained the majority of venture capital activity, pulling in $91 billion—accounting for about 57% of the worldwide total in Q3. The San Francisco Bay Area alone captured 24% of all global venture investment during the quarter.
AI-driven startups across the entire stack raised $102 billion, representing 64% of global venture capital. Although this share declined from the previous two quarters, it remains 14 percentage points higher than global funding levels seen in Q3 2025.
The physical AI sector has continued to draw substantial capital in 2026. This trend persisted through Q3 as aerospace, robotics, data centers, semiconductors, and energy sectors each generated $10 billion or more during the period.
Late-stage funding
Crunchbase data indicates that late-stage venture financing reached $105 billion in Q3, marking a 23% drop from Q2 but a 73% rise compared to Q3 2025. Funding rounds valued at $100 million and above made up nearly 90% of all late-stage financings.
Early-stage funding
Early-stage funding hit $40.6 billion in Q3, representing a 25% increase year-over-year. Jumbo-sized rounds valued at $100 million and greater accounted for 50% of all early-stage financings.
Seed
Global seed funding totaled $13 billion in Q3, according to Crunchbase. Out of that figure, $2.6 billion was directed toward seed rounds of $100 million and above, making up about 20% of seed financings.
Exits: IPOs and M&A
Q3 proved to be a relatively robust quarter for exits, with China leading the IPO landscape for major listings as semiconductor and robotics market debuts surged on their first day.
- ChangXin Memory Technologies, a China-based DRAM chip developer, recorded the largest Q3 IPO by raising $8.6 billion at an $85.5 billion valuation. Its shares skyrocketed over 500% on debut to become the most valuable listed entity on its local market.
- Singapore-based fast fashion enterprise Shein completed the second-largest listing at a $26.3 billion valuation, significantly below its 2022 peak of $100 billion. Shein was a notable outlier that finished its first trading day near its opening price after dropping approximately 10%.
- Shanghai-based AI chip producer and Nvidia competitor Enflame went public in September, collecting $912 million at a $25.5 billion valuation.
- Milan-based Bending Spoons, which previously acquired Airtable and Miro, debuted by raising $1.6 billion at an $18.4 billion valuation.
- Hangzhou-based humanoid robotics developer Unitree Robotics went public, securing $905 million and opening at a $9 billion valuation.
Meanwhile, U.S.-based companies led the largest M&A transactions.
Semiconductor firms emerged as the primary acquirers in Q3. Nvidia proposed acquiring New York-based open-source AI platform Hugging Face for $12.9 billion. Semiconductor major AMD announced its plan to buy Fei Fei Li’s World Labs—a San Francisco developer of physical intelligence models—for $8.2 billion. The third-largest buyout involved payments provider Stripe acquiring New York-based AI model router OpenRouter for $7.5 billion.
Robust market
Over recent quarters, larger check sizes across all funding stages have driven venture investments upward as young AI enterprises rapidly gain traction. Half of all startup capital invested in Q3 went to companies founded since 2022.
Venture funding has also branched out from pure software into physical infrastructure and robotics, contributing to the reindustrialization of economies. Additionally, a dynamic seed funding environment for AI-native startups points to an ongoing appetite for the next wave of businesses.
Methodology
The figures featured in this report originate directly from Crunchbase and are derived from reported data as of Oct. 2, 2026.
Data lags are typically most evident at the earliest stages of venture activity, with seed funding totals frequently increasing substantially after a quarter or year concludes.
All funding values are presented in U.S. dollars unless stated otherwise. Crunchbase converts foreign currencies to U.S. dollars using the prevailing spot rate on the date the funding round, acquisition, IPO, or financial event is reported. Even if these events are recorded long after being announced, foreign transactions utilize the historic spot price.
Glossary of funding terms
Seed and angel comprises seed, pre-seed, and angel rounds. Crunchbase also groups venture rounds of unspecified series, equity crowdfunding, and convertible notes valued at $3 million (USD or as-converted USD equivalent) or less into this category.
Early-stage includes Series A and Series B rounds, alongside other round classifications. Crunchbase counts venture rounds of unknown series, corporate venture, and alternative rounds exceeding $3 million up to $15 million in this tier.
Late-stage consists of Series C, Series D, Series E, and subsequent lettered venture rounds following the “Series [Letter]” convention. It also encompasses venture rounds of unknown series, corporate ventures, and other rounds surpassing $15 million. Corporate rounds are factored in only if the company has previously secured equity funding from seed through venture series stages.
Technology growth represents private-equity funding obtained by a company that has already raised a venture round across any of the previously defined tiers.
